On Friday, April 20, 2018, Mrs. Raeburn (Epler) Barnes will be joined by a trio of twentieth-century Sidney High graduates to form the 25th induction class of the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor. Upon her death in 1964, her will established the Raeburn E. Barnes Trust. The designated process allowed the program to begin loaning funds to Sidney and Shelby County graduates in late 1983. Since then over 2500 students have been assisted with almost 18 million dollars.
Marlin Shamblin and Ken McCormick were good friends from their days at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Shamblin became a Spanish teacher at Sidney High School and urged his social studies counterpart to join him in a community he and his family had come to enjoy and call "home."
In 1968 the two were reunited until retiring from teaching. Shamblin gets credit not only for bringing a fine educator to Sidney but also a caring person who would become a full participant in school, church, and community.
On Friday, April 21, at 7:30pm in the SHS auditorium, the late Kenneth W. McCormick will receive the highest honor bestowed by the school district when he's inducted into the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor along with three alumni, Susan L. Russell (SHS 1970), Martin L. "Mick" Given (SHS 1975), and Thomas P. Milligan (SHS 1978). A gymnasium reception will follow with both events open to the public.
Charles G. Rhyan was known as "Chuck" during his days in the Sidney City Schools (SHS 1961). More recently he's been known as "Charlie." When it came time to choose a profession, he knew he wanted to coach basketball which would also entail being a teacher. Though his coaching & teaching didn't last all that long, they got him into the educational field where his level of achievement has propelled him into the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor, whose 23rd induction is set for Friday April 15 at 7:30pm in the SHS auditorium. The annual event will be followed by a gymnasium reception, with both open to the public. Rhyan's 2016 classmates include fellow Sidney alums Rob Decker (1978), Marj Dunnavant (1954), and Kathy Lindsey (1967). This foursome will increase Hall membership to 119.
